Carmen Sailing Ship Kit
£89.95

The Spanish pailebote Carmen was built in 1850. With a capacity of 250 tonnes it plied the Mediterranean throughout its years of service transporting commercial loads in competition with the big steam ships. It was able to survive thanks to its lower freight charges. Rigged out as a schooner, with spankers and gaff topsails, it was called a 'pailebote', a corruption of the English 'pilot boat', a type of small schooner with little rigging used by some harbour pilots, hence the name.
