In the United States, stagecoaches run between Boston and Rhode Island as early as 1716, but no further design developed until the middle of that century.
But the style we all recognise now was produced much later on, and they were almost the only form of cross-country transport available.
However it was during the development of the West that the famous stagecoaches made their mark,being under contract to the government and carrying mail, new legislation notices, payrolls to the troops, and money transfers, but of course passengers always travelled on different stages
