The Vanguard was constructed in 1841 by Thomas Ellis, is one of the fi rst famous
tugboats with wheels of wood paddles, inclined stem and cane rudder. These paddle
steamers were used to tow boats along the river Tyne in the Northeast of England –
the predecessors to modern tugboats – they became an essential part of the history
