This set is made up of a selection from 78 interesting chessmen discovered in 1831 in an underground chamber at Androil on the west coast of the Isle of Lewis.
The pieces found included ten battered kings with long curls down their backs, six unthroned queens, sixteen bishops, and 15 mounted knights
It is now thought that they were carved in Scandinavia circa 1172 and most of the pieces are now in the British Museum.
King is 90mm high.
